How Much CBD Should I Give My Dog?

You’ve read up on hemp derived CBD and you think it can help improve your dog’s quality of life. At first glance, figuring out how much CBD you should give your dog can seem confusing. Depending on a variety of factors such as their weight, their condition and what CBD product and strength you’ve chosen, you’ll find varying recommendations.

To help settle the confusion, we at Holistic Hound have created this guide to help find the right CBD dosage for your dog. After reading through this guide, you should have no problems finding just the right dose of CBD to give your dog, without having to worry about giving them too much.

What Factors Determine the Right Hemp Oil Dosage for Dogs?

Before figuring out the right CBD dosage for your dog, you need to know what factors go into it. The three main factors that play into how much CBD you can give your dog are their size, what condition or symptoms you’re trying to treat, and what CBD product you have for your dog.

Your Dog’s Size

There is no industry or veterinary standard for how much CBD to give your dog.  Although the weight of your dog doesn’t always correlate with how much CBD he/she needs, it’s a good starting point in figuring out an ideal dose.  We generally recommend starting with a minimal dose of 1 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight.

Your Dog’s Condition or Symptoms

Another factor that you have to consider when determining the correct CBD dose for your dog is what condition you’re looking to address. Some conditions require higher doses of CBD than others. If you are using hemp CBD oil to help your dog with a more serious condition you may want to consider starting with 2-5 mg CBD per 10 pounds of body weight, once to several times per day.  Please always consult your veterinarian for guidance.

CBD Product Strength & Form

Like the CBD oils and tinctures sold for human consumption, CBD oil for dogs comes in a variety of different strengths. A 100mg CBD oil is going to be much less concentrated than a 1000mg CBD oil, meaning more of the product will have to be used to provide the same level of relief.

Aside from just the strength of your CBD product, products such as CBD dog treats will absorb more slowly than a CBD oil or tincture, meaning you may need to give your dog a slightly higher dose to get the same effect.

What is the correct CBD dosage for dogs?

As stated above, while there is little risk of giving your dog too much CBD, it’s best to start slow, with a minimal dose of 1 mg CBD per 10 pounds of weight.

If you’re interested in using a CBD oil to treat your dog, such as our Full Spectrum Hemp Oil with 100 mg CBD, you’ll find straightforward instructions on how much to give, by weight, right on the bottle.

There are 30 droppers per bottle and each dropper contains approximately 3.3 mg of CBD or 100 mg per bottle (30 droppers x 3.3 mg = 100 mg)

Putting It All Together

To help put all this into practice we’ll use the following example:

You have purchased our Full Spectrum Hemp Oil with 100 mg CBD for your 45 pound, four-year-old Sheltie to help relieve her separation anxiety.

The instructions on the bottle say to give between 3-5 mg CBD.  Each dropper equals 3.3 mg CBD so you would give approximately 1 to 1 1/2 droppers full which would equal approximately 3.3 mg to 5 mg.

It you see the results you are looking for, like a calmer demeanor, you can continue with this dosage; however, if you don’t notice much of a change after giving for several days, try increasing the dose incrementally, by another half dropper, until you get the effects you are looking for.

Can My Dog Take Too Much CBD?

If you’re on the fence about giving CBD a try to treat your dog’s condition, for fear that they may react badly or get “high”, you really don’t have to worry. Plenty of studies have been done on CBD which shows that CBD is well-tolerated, even at extremely high doses, and the risk of an overdose is virtually non-existent at reasonable doses.

As long as you purchase your dog’s CBD from a reputable vendor, it should contain CBD, which is non-intoxicating, and possibly a very small amount of THC. Keep in mind that legally, CBD oil products must contain no more than 0.3% THC, which is far below the levels necessary to produce any psychoactive effects.

Figuring out the right dose of CBD to give your dog can take some time so don’t get discouraged and be willing to experiment to find the dose that works well for your dog. Always consider your dog’s weight and the condition you are trying to address and stick with a reputable company you trust.
